CopperVisions
The most recent series by Paul Chase is called “CopperVisions.” Each oil painting has
a splash of copper foil and a section of embedded wrinkled silk...and
combines design elements of Georgia O’Keeffe’s flower series.
The Paul Chase - Georgia O'Keeffe Connection
Paul Chase was born in Sun Prairie Wisconsin, the hometown of Georgia O’Keeffe. Paul’s grandmother and Georgia were second cousins. Although many years apart Paul and Georgia spent their early days on farms about ten miles apart and walked the streets of Sun Prairie when they were young. They both developed their artistic roots early in life around the town. Paul had demonstrated an above average ability in drawing in grade school, often helping others in the art class. Georgia also began to draw in her early years on the farm in Sun Prairie.
Paul often visited his grandmother’s home after school and watched his grandfather in his basement woodshop. He noticed a picture of a cow skull and rose hanging on the wall and it seemed “strange” for his grandparents house. He asked his grandfather about the page ripped from an old Life magazine. He replied “Oh, that’s your grandmas’s cousin, she is an artist. Who would ever buy something like that?” That was about 1964!
Paul went to college in Wisconsin and began his art career with a drafting class...eventually he declared a fine arts major. He graduated in 1970 and moved to Missoula Montana. There he studied art education and eventually became an art teacher in the Missoula high school. Eight years later he moved to Wenatchee, Washington on the edge of the Cascade mountains, the Columbia River and the arid grasslands. Like Georgia O’Keeffe he felt “the calling” of the rugged beauty of the west, the mountains, and the vast sky.
Paul returned to the Midwest to complete a Masters degree in Graphic Communications. He taught art for 32 years in high school, vocational school and community college and always worked on his own creative projects.
Paul visited Abiquiu in the early 1980s and went to Georgia O’Keeffe’s Ghost Ranch. She was at home, but not taking visitors. He left his name, his story and address and received a signed note card from Georgia thanking him for the visit and suggesting to check her recently published biography to see how they were related.
Paul’s original 22x30” color pencil drawing of a flower and cowskull is now in the permanent collection of the Georgia O’Keeffe exhibit in Sun Prairie Wisconsin.
Shortly before Paul retired from teaching he developed a series of large format paintings of guitars-a shadow of O’Keeffe’s large close up flower series. Paul had been playing guitar for years and felt a passion for the beauty of the instrument. His series of 200 plus originals explores closeup compostions of the guitar in oil, acrylic, color pencil, and collage. “GraphicGuitars” paintings and prints are in collections worldwide.
Traveling to the Southwest influenced a combination of the guitar and abstract design in the series “Silk Six-String Abstracts” - large format oil and acrylic paintings with the signature texture of embedded silk and six lines...or strings.
